Six boats raced in Thursday’s Robie Pierce Women’s Invitational—not a remarkable statistic except that five crew were Burke Rehabilitation Center outpatients who had never sailed before. Once properly “geared-up,” those women had the time of their lives. After four races the team of Judy Kowaleski (San Diego, CA) and Karrell Reginer (Gatineau, QC) sailing with Ginny Worcster (Southport, CT) as able-bodied (AB) sailor took the day with three first places and one second. LYC’s Alison Puleo and Joanne Clarke also participated as ABs.
Over the three-day One-Design Regatta, 19 boats sailed with 15 LYC members rotating in and out of the critical AB role. PRO Cynthia Parthemos had her hands full as the weekend’s winds did not always cooperate. Friday’s shifty winds allowed four races but Saturday morning presented gusts exceeding 25 knots only to have the wind peter out after only two races that afternoon. Sunday’s light breezes allowed only one additional heat for a total of seven races.
In the end, Hyannis Yacht Club’s Mike Hersey, sailing with 2008 Paralympic Gold Medalist Maureen McKinnon (Marblehead, MA) and Mike’s son Matt as AB, won a tie-breaker for the title. They beat the U.S. Paralympic Team member Gerry Tiernan (Falmouth, ME) and Dennis Moran (Framingham, MA). Also in the hunt finishing third, was Charlie Rosenfield (Woodstock, CT) with LYC’s Rear Commodore, Bill Blanchard, crewing with LYC member Chris Allen and LYC junior member Owen Zimmermann as ABs. Former LYC junior sailor Paul Garcia (Hyannis, MA) sailing with recently retired Green Beret Chris Livesay (Ft. Worth, TX) and AB Tim Walsh rounded out the top four.
